Our Town

Royal Leamington Spa is a distinctive town, shaped by its Regency and Victorian heritage, its parks and gardens, and the River Leam running through its centre.

From its rapid growth as a fashionable spa in the early nineteenth century to the lively and diverse town of today, Leamington has continually evolved while retaining a strong sense of place.

A town shaped by its heritage

Leamington’s elegant terraces, crescents, villas and civic buildings are an important part of its character. The Royal Pump Rooms, Parade, Lansdowne Crescent, the Town Hall and many other buildings tell the story of the town’s remarkable transformation from a small village into a nationally known spa.

Much of central Leamington is protected by conservation area designation, and the town has an exceptional collection of listed buildings and structures ranging from Regency terraces to its Art Deco railway station.

Parks, gardens and waterways

Green space is central to Leamington’s identity. The River Leam links a sequence of parks and gardens through the heart of the town, including Jephson Gardens, the Pump Room Gardens and Victoria Park.

These historic landscapes provide places for recreation, events, wildlife and everyday enjoyment, while the Grand Union Canal to the south adds another important green corridor for walking and cycling.

A lively town today

Leamington combines its historic character with a thriving contemporary life. Its town centre supports independent shops alongside larger retailers, with a wide choice of cafés, restaurants, markets and cultural venues.

The town also has a strong creative and digital sector — particularly the games industry for which “Silicon Spa” has become well known — while its central location and rail connections make it an attractive place to live, work and visit.

Arts, music, theatre, exhibitions and community events form an important part of life in the town, centred on venues including the Royal Pump Rooms and Royal Spa Centre as well as numerous independent organisations.

Looking after Leamington

Leamington’s character is not something that can be taken for granted. The town continues to change, bringing both opportunities and challenges for its historic buildings, streets, green spaces and public realm.

The Leamington Society works to help protect what is special about the town while supporting thoughtful, well-designed and sustainable change.

Through advocacy, practical projects and working with local organisations and public bodies, we aim to help ensure that Leamington remains a distinctive and enjoyable place for generations to come.
